Single pieces and grouped wall arrangements
The work can involve hanging one framed piece, aligning a pair or laying out a gallery grouping. Decide which pieces belong in the arrangement and whether the positions are already chosen. Very large, fragile or unusually valuable pieces may need specialist handling; artwork conservation, frame restoration and appraisal are separate from hanging.
Plan height and spacing in the room
Measure the wall area and the furniture or feature the artwork will sit above. For a group, compare the complete arrangement rather than placing each frame independently. A tape or paper layout can help confirm spacing before holes are made, particularly where frames differ in size or their hangers sit at different heights.
Match wall fixings to the actual load
The frame’s weight and hanging hardware must be considered with the wall construction and the fixing manufacturer’s requirements. Drywall, plaster, masonry and tiled surfaces need different approaches. An existing nail or hook should not be assumed suitable for a replacement piece, and concealed wiring or pipe routes need consideration before drilling.
Check the frame and hanging hardware
Inspect the back of the piece for sound attachment points, damaged wire or loose fittings. A secure wall hook cannot compensate for hardware pulling out of the frame. Confirm whether a cleat, paired hangers or another specified system is required, and how far the piece will stand away from the wall.
Reuse a hanger or change the mounting?
A stable, compatible hanger may be retained when the piece and position remain the same. Enlarged wall holes, bent hooks, failing wire or a heavier replacement call for reassessment. A cracked frame or loose frame joint needs repair before hanging; that condition should not be hidden by simply changing the wall fixing.
Protect the wall and finish the layout
Agree how old holes and visible marks will be handled before relocating artwork. Wall repair may be needed before a new arrangement, especially when the new pieces will not cover previous mounting points. Check the final alignment, clearances and contact points without promising an invisible match to aged wall paint.
What to photograph and measure
Send the number of pieces, their dimensions and known weights, plus front and back photos showing the hardware. Include a full wall photograph and the desired arrangement or height. Mention fragile glazing, stairwell locations or furniture that limits access; do not lift a heavy piece just to obtain missing details.
When the display needs shelves or fitted woodwork
If you want artwork to rest on a display ledge, shelving installation addresses the shelf and its intended load. A fitted display surround belongs in interior carpentry. Keeping those additions explicit helps distinguish a simple hanging request from building a new display area.
